If your business, nonprofit, homeowner association, or organization has a website built using Weebly, you may be wondering what the future holds. Well, it’s time for a Weebly website migration.

I helped many organizations build websites using Weebly because it was simple, affordable, and easy to update. However, Weebly was acquired by Square, and over time Square has shifted its focus toward its newer website and ecommerce products.

While Weebly websites continue to function normally today, industry discussions and platform trends suggest that Weebly is moving into a long-term “maintenance mode” with no future updates or enhancements. Because Square has stopped updating the software, it may eventually not function properly like it does today.

The good news: there is no reason to panic or make an immediate change. A thoughtful transition can happen over time and on your schedule.

My Experience with Weebly Websites

Weebly vs WordPressFor many years, I built Weebly websites for clients who needed a simple, affordable website that they could manage themselves as opposed to a more comprehensive platform like WordPress.

For small businesses, nonprofits, community organizations, and associations that needed a straightforward online presence, Weebly was a great fit. It allowed clients to make basic updates without needing technical skills or ongoing website support.

Now is a good time to evaluate your options, preserve your content, and make a thoughtful decision about what type of website you need for the future. I have a WordPress theme I use that offers the “drag and drop” type of page builder similar to Weebly. Making website creating and editing easy for my clients. Read more about why I use the Enfold theme I use.

Why Start Planning a Weebly Website Transition?

A website platform is like any other technology tool, eventually it may become outdated, unsupported, or no longer meet your organization’s needs.

Here’s what I recommend you do now:

  • Review your current website content and remove old, outdated content
  • Compare website platforms to find one that fits your needs and your budget
  • Plan a transition timeline that’s convenient for your organization
  • Make sure you have your photos, videos, and PDFs stored in an alternate platform like Google Drive or Dropbox

Waiting until something breaks will cause stress and frustration. I would make the change sooner rather than later so you are in control.

Your Website Needs to Be Rebuilt — Not “Moved”

Changing website platforms is not a simple transfer. Your whole Weebly website cannot be copied directly into another platform. Instead, the new website is built using a different system, with your existing content, images, documents, and branding used as the foundation. Content is copied, page by page, to the new site. All images and documents need to be uploaded into the new website’s media library. The good news is that this is also an opportunity to clean up outdated information and improve navigation and functionality.

Weebly Website Alternatives to Consider

The best platform depends on your organization’s needs, budget, and how much control you want over the website. I like to stay in my wheelhouse so I can help you with a new Squarespace or WordPress website as your Weebly website alternatives.

Squarespace

Squarespace is a good option for organizations that want a professional-looking website with simpler maintenance than WordPress. Monthly plans start at $16/month up to $39/month for more robust features. See current options. I have built or improved several Squarespace sites, including adding MembershipWorks.

It works well for:

  • Small businesses
  • Professional services
  • Community and trade organizations
  • Organizations that do not need complex features
  • Membership management

WordPress

WordPress is a more robust option and is often the best choice for organizations that want room to grow, need additional features, or focus on blog posts and better search results.

It works well for:

  • Businesses that rely on search engine traffic
  • Organizations with more complex needs
  • Websites that need additional functionality, special forms and integrations with other platforms
  • Focus on blogging, newsletter archives, extensive photo galleries
  • Membership management

I have a blog post that compares Squarespace and WordPress you might find helpful.

Square Websites

Since Square owns Weebly, you may consider having them convert your site to a Square site, especially if you already use Square for payments or ecommerce.

it is important to compare features carefully and choose the platform that best fits your future needs. I have not built sites with Square, so if you choose this platform, you will need to find a developer to help you make sure its set up properly or use their online support.

Don’t Forget About Your Documents and Website Files

Many organizations use their website as a document library. Homeowner associations, nonprofits, clubs, and membership organizations often store:

  • Meeting minutes
  • Financial documents
  • Forms and policies
  • Member resources
  • Extensive photo galleries and historical records

Before changing website platforms, I recommend creating an organization-owned archive.

Consider storing important documents and images in a dedicated cloud storage account such as Google Drive or Dropbox.

The key is that the account belongs to your organization — not an individual volunteer, board member, or website admin.

This protects your records if leadership changes or someone who manages the website is no longer available. I cannot emphasize this enough. I have worked with organizations where a key person passed away, and no one could access important website accounts or files. I have also seen situations where a former employee or volunteer left the organization and account access was difficult to recover.

Your Domain Name Can Move with You

Don’t worry about losing your website address when you move to a different website platform. Your domain name (your website address) is separate from your website software. In most cases, your domain can be transferred to a new website hosting provider when you build a new website. Or, we can “point” your domain to a different hosting provider. We will review and see when your domain and current hosting account expires to try to avoid overlapping services.

How I Help Clients Transition Away from Weebly

I help small businesses, nonprofits, and organizations evaluate their website options and plan practical transitions.

I create websites using WordPress and Squarespace, and I can also help you prepare your content, organize documents, and create a transition plan.

The first step is simply understanding your options. A website transition does not have to be rushed. Planning ahead gives you time to make the right decision for your organization.

So, why Weebly Websites?

What I have found is that for SOME of my clients, WordPress is just too much. It is so robust and offers so many features and settings, that it becomes too much for them to edit, update and manage moving forward. I got turned on to Weebly websites from a fellow website developer who noticed the same thing.

Wordpress websites and blogsI am still a firm believer in WordPress. I believe it will continue to be popular and the right choice for some of my clients. But, having this secondary option, is refreshing.

Weebly has about 20 themes to choose from, so it’s more limited than WordPress.

Weebly websites offer a simple “drop and drag” building interface that makes it easy to see exactly what your site will look like once published.

I use a specific WordPress theme that has several demo templates to choose from and also offers a drag-and-drop style page builder.

With Weebly, you don’t need to worry about adding plugins to your website. You don’t have to make sure the theme and Weebly software are kept updated. Weebly takes care of all of that. You do need to manage these for a WordPress website, but they can be enabled to update automatically. But still, they need to be updated.

WordPress is King when it comes to Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Plus, it offers almost an unlimited assortment of plugins you can add to the platform to give your site extra functionality. Weebly is a good option if SEO isn’t vital to your site, like you aren’t trying to attraction readers from the entire world, maybe just your geographic location. Weebly’s SEO statistics is built-in, no extra plugin to add. If we use WordPress for your site, I will recommend a Google Analytics account is set up for optimal SEO.

As far as price, it’s less expensive to host a WordPress site than Weebly. $2.95/month (using BlueHost.com) vs $12/month for the Weebly Professional Plan). Check sites for current pricing.

Weebly does not offer email services. If your domain is with Weebly, then you will need to sign up for (and pay for) Google Workspace. If your domain is at BlueHost.com, then we can set up your custom domain email account and you can either use BlueHost to check your mail or use something like Outlook or Google Workspace (extra fee). Ask me about email services and I can explain your options and help you decide.

There are tons of other, more detailed comparisons I could make, but I prefer to meet with my clients and listen to what they want from their site FIRST before I recommend one or the other. See my page about How I Work.

If you are considering a new website or blog, or updating a current site, give me a call. We can connect, with no obligation, to determine what’s best for you.

WEEBLY WEBSITE UPDATE 3/2/2026

BlueHost.com has announced that they are no longer supporting the Weebly software on their platform. So if you have a Weebly website, hosted with BlueHost.com, you will need to convert to a different platform. I can help you migrate your site to a WordPress or Squarespace website. Or, you have other options.

If you signed up directly with Weebly, you can continue to maintain the site you have at this time. Anyone looking for a new Weebly website will be asked to use Square Online. No more Weebly sites can be created. Weebly merged with Square in 2018. Square, Inc. officially changed its corporate name to Block, Inc. in December 2021.

Contact me if you have a Weebly website hosted with Weebly (Square/Block). The software isn’t going to be enhanced like other platforms. It served it purpose as an easy platform for beginners or non-technical admins but now it’s time to pick something else that will keep up with the growth and technology surrounding websites.

Contact me with your questions about Weebly, Square, WordPress or Squarespace websites.

If you need a membership website, learn more about the websites I make using MembershipWorks.com.

What Do Clients and Customers Think of Your Website?

Do clients and customers ever tell you what they think of your website? Probably not. What about prospects or potential members for your organization? They might share with you if they like it, but if they are turned-off by your website, they just go away and you never even know why you lost them.

First impressions are very important in business and for nonprofit organizations. What does your website say about you?

It doesn’t matter if you dedicate time and resources for nice business cards, brochures and other marketing materials if online users never get past your website.

Need a new website?

I work with clients to review their current websites and discover what’s working and what’s not. I make sure that their message is in alignment with their other marketing materials and that the message is clear and attracts their ideal client.

I have worked with several clients where we reviewed their Facebook page, LinkedIn profile, website and print materials to get them all looking and saying the same cohesive message.

I create websites and blogs primarily using WordPress because it’s search engine friendly naturally. Plus, I can customize the design to fit my client’s style.

Clients give me an idea of what features they need like online forms, a calendar for events, videos, password protected pages, shopping cart, downloadable documents, etc. I create a proposal based on my client’s needs. We work together on design style and content until the site is launched.

Once the website is live, I teach my clients how to maintain their site. I offer tips on effective blog posts and how to stay fresh. I do as much or as little as my clients want me to do. Some clients want to take it over and run with it, others want me to make the updates. I’m fine either way. You can read my “How I work” post. I offer advice and training to empower my clients. However, many just don’t have time to work on a website, they are busy serving their customers, members and clients.

I enjoy taking on an outdated website and giving it new life. I love creating websites and blogs my clients are eager to share. If you need a new site, or want to update your current website, I’d love to hear from you.

I have more recommendations on my MembershipWorks profile if you are looking for a website for your nonprofit that includes features like Membership and Event management, online Donations and Custom Forms.
